Engaging with Jan Arogya Samiti to improve population health

Community Engagement Through Jan Arogya Samitis (JAS) for Early Detection of Chronic Illnesses – Hypertension & Diabetes Mellitus in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh

Despite the high burden of NCDs in Uttar Pradesh, screening coverage remains low. To improve the early detection of hypertension (HT) and diabetes mellitus (DM), a community-based intervention is being implemented in Bitaura block, Fatehpur district through the active involvement of Jan Arogya Samitis (JAS) under the Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC) approach.

JAS serves as a grassroots health governance platform that bridges communities with Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs (AAMs), promoting participatory health planning, accountability, and improved service delivery.

This intervention is being implemented in 10 AAMs to strengthen community mobilization, screening coverage, and system readiness. Key strategies include structured JAS training, monthly meetings, awareness drives, and household-level mobilization. Healthcare teams (CHOs, ANMs, ASHAs) and community leaders are trained to screen, refer, and track patients effectively.

Through collaborative efforts between IPSI, Jhpiego, and the district health administration, this initiative aims to enhance early detection, improve patient follow-up, and increase the use of digital tools like eKavach. This model seeks to demonstrate how empowered communities, guided by JAS, can play a critical role in achieving better health outcomes and strengthening primary healthcare systems at the grassroots level.
